James's Preschool Experience

This little guy started preschool at St. Mary's of the Knobs (SMK) on January 7, 2015, and I'm pretty sure he loved every minute of it.  He attended school 3 days a week (M, W,  F) for 3 hours during the afternoon.

First day of preschool

The first couple of weeks, when I would ask him what he learned, he would say "Nothing.  I just played!".  His teacher gave us a weekly newsletter (that I looked forward to every week!) that described the classroom activities for the week and some suggested review questions.  He finally started opening up about what he learned and who he played with, and we started incorporating some of the prayers and songs he learned at school into our daily lives at home.  I think my favorite is the "Clean Up Song" :)

Posing with the excavator Valentine box he made for his party at school.

It was fun trying to interpret song lyrics after he learned a new song.  For example,  James would sing "Apple Weenie" instead of "Apple Annie".   At our parent/teacher conference, his teacher, Mrs. Sherrell, told us that on his first day, she called him over during "Circle Time".  Circle Time is when the kids play while the teachers call each child over in turn to work with them individually.  He told her, "Oh, honey, I'm playing right now.  I'll be over when I'm done."  She said that she looked over to the Teaching Assistant, Mrs. Walker, and it took everything they had not to crack up laughing. (She did inform us that after that incident, he always came over right away when called.  He apparently listened to his teachers much better than he listens to his parents!)

School Easter Egg Hunt

Picking him up from school was fun, too.  He'd come out of the door with a huge grin and give me a hug.  One day, he came out wearing his "back up pants" which were kept in his bag in case of potty accidents.  He eagerly ran over to me and said, "One of my classmates pooped on the floor and I crawled in it!".  I asked him, "Was it you?" and he assured me it was someone else.  I found his story a little hard to believe, but as I looked through his backpack, sure enough, there was a note from his teacher apologizing and saying that a classmate of his did indeed poop on the floor and James crawled in it before they noticed the mess.

SMK Fun in the Sun day

He had a lot of really nice kids in his class.  He often admired their backpacks and called the girls "my girls".  He told me a few times that I should set Matthias by "my girls" when I take him to school because "they like babies".  He really liked a little girl named Brinley.  When I was asking him about his friends once, he said "I like Brinley.  We look at each other." (They had assigned seating, and she sat across from him.)  He was going through his Valentine's candy and showed me a plastic red heart, saying "Do you know why Brinley gave this to me?  Because she loves me."  Sadly, Brinley is in the morning pre-K class this year, so he doesn't get to see her.  Hopefully they'll be reunited in Kindergarten!

James's teacher, Mrs. Sherrell, is absolutely wonderful.  Before he started school, whenever I mentioned to people that had children who went to SMK that he was going to be starting preschool there, they would say how wonderful she is.  I  didn't think much of it, but they were 100% right.  She is very warm, caring, and friendly - exactly how you would imagine the perfect preschool teacher to be.  James was drawn to her immediately.  He told me that she's his best friend, and he often talked about inviting her over to our house.  I am very thankful that she has been a part of his life!

James & Mrs. Sherrell

At the end of the school year, James's class put on a program, singing songs and reciting nursery rhymes.  I captured most of it on my phone, but please forgive the poor quality - I was holding a sleeping (and heavy!) Matthias at the time :)

It's so hard to believe that my baby has just started pre-K.  What a difference 6 months makes!

Yesterday, he started pre-K with Mrs. Dennison.  He'll attend school 5 days a week for 3 hours in the afternoon.  I pray that he continues to love school and that his smile is that bright every year on the first day.

Quotable James Hardin (Part 3)

James: What's your favorite sauce?  Mine's apple sauce, then tomato sauce.

James: What's your favorite white thing over there?
(points to laundry room)
Mine's the dryer.
*****

Mama: I need to figure out what you guys are going to wear to the wedding.
James: Well, I can just wear three pairs of underwear.

James (to Mama): You're a pretty good looking girl...You're good at looking for things.

(Charlie is nodding off to sleep in his carseat.  His eyelids are slowly closing....)
James: What's wrong with his eyeballs?

James: There was an old lady...who had a lot of kids she didn't understand.
(James's version of the nursery rhyme "There was an old lady who lived in a shoe")

(James has been learning about the Easter Story in school.)
Mama: What can you tell me about Easter?
James (says solemnly): Jesus falls a second time.
*****

(Upon bringing Matthias home from the hospital)
James: Let's put him on the floor and see what he can do.

(While watching me burp Matthias)
James: Why are you hitting him?

(Discussing the kimchi fried rice on his plate)
James: I'm not going to eat all of it.  I'm going to save a little bit so when Matthias gets bigger he can try it and see if he likes it.

(James sits on the toilet and farts.)
James: "Let's call those number 3's."
*****

Mama: Did you learn about God in school today?
James: Yes, we learned about Noah's artwork...I mean Noah's art.

(After being told that he can only bring one of his two tractor pillows on vacation)
James (in a very condescending tone): Well honey, I know this is hard, but one is to sleep on and one is to sleep with.
(He brought both pillows.)

And now, one from Charlie:
Mama: Do you want to watch Scooby Doo?
Charlie: No, Shaggy Doo!

Matthias John - 3 Months

Look who's 3 months old!

I may have mentioned this before, but Matthias brings such joy to our hearts.  He is quick to smile, is hardly ever fussy (he's even starting to get over his hatred of riding in the van!), and loves to "talk".  He's moved on from cooing to trying out different grunts, squawks, and zombie-like noises.

He's starting to play a little with toys, and is putting anything he can get a hold of in his mouth.  He's a big fan of his activity mat, and has laid on it playing for up to 45 minutes at a time while his brothers play nearby.  Or sometimes they like to lay down to play with him.

He has great head control and likes to see what's going on around him.

No doctor's appointment this month so I'm not sure how much he weighs, but you can tell by those delicious arm rolls that this boy doesn't miss a meal :)

He's been an awesome sleeper, too; he usually only wakes up once at 3am and goes right back to sleep after eating.

Matthias John - 2 Months

Matthias turned 2 months old on May 20th.

At his 2 month check-up, he gained almost 2 pounds from the month before (12 lbs, 10 oz).  The poor little guy had to get 4 shots. He was pretty cranky for the rest of the day, although I'm not entirely sure if the crankiness was due to the shots or due to being hit in the head by wooden toy train thrown by Charlie that morning.

He's starting to coo and loves to suck on his fist.  He's also staring to become more aware of his surroundings.

The picture below is a little blurry, but I wanted to get a shot of his toes.  He has an incredibly long big toe and a pretty big space between his first and second toe.

Both of his brothers have adapted really well, but James absolutely loves him.  He brings Matthias toys, comforts him when he's fussy, and will randomly say "I love him".  When James talks to him, he'll use a very high pitched voice and say things like "You're the cutest baby in the world.  Yes, you are! No other baby is cute like you are."  It is very sweet to watch the two of them together.

A Dinosaur Train Birthday

The Birthday Boy

Playing with his food.  Hey, dinosaurs have to eat, too!

The amazing Dinosaur Train cake made by his Grandma Patsy

Presents!

April 24th - BeCha turns 2!

Now that he's 2 years and 2 months, it's about time I shared what we did for Charlie's Birthday :).

After posing for a picture with his brothers in their pajamas, we got the day started with a few of his favorite things: his family, pancakes, and his most favorite thing ever, BACON!  We met his Grandparents, Great Grandpa, and Aunt Emily at Cracker Barrel for breakfast where he ate not only his entire order of bacon, but some of Emily's as well.

His birthday fell on a Friday, which was a school day for James, so after breakfast we headed back home to get ready for school.  Charlie took a nap while James did some learning, and then we all headed to Community Park in New Albany.

The boys loved it.  Charlie's favorite was the slide.

After going down, he'd run over to the steps, climb them as fast as he could, and go down again.  I think he did this loop about 25 times - he was panting pretty hard by the time he decided to move on to something else.

He did a little swinging

And actually played nicely with (or at least next to) his brother James for awhile.

Matthew met us there, and we grabbed another of Charlie's favorites (pizza!) on the way home for dinner.  Pizza was followed by white ice cream...

...And some present opening.  He kept saying "ooooh!" - it was so adorable.  James was happy to lend a hand with some of the tricky wrapping paper :)

The day ended with a bath.

It's pretty obvious, but just in case you're wondering what he's doing in the bottom left picture, he's pretending to be a puppy ghost.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Charles Norman!
